Adds a Places tab to the Photos section: a self-hosted MapLibre GL map of
the user's geotagged photos.
- places.js: lazy-loads vendored MapLibre + pmtiles.js on first open; draws
the server-aggregated clusters (GET /api/photos/geo) as HTML thumbnail
markers (no glyphs/sprites, no client-side clustering); pan/zoom refetches
for the new viewport; click a cluster to zoom in, or a single photo to
open it in the lightbox.
- Optional vector basemap read directly from /basemaps/basemap.pmtiles over
HTTP Range (label-light Protomaps style, light/dark aware); falls back to
a themed background when no basemap is present. ODbL attribution shown.
- "Moments | Places" sub-nav wired into the Photos section.
- enable_places now defaults on, since the route + UI are ready.
No new backend serving code: tower-http ServeDir already serves static/
with Range, so the .pmtiles basemap is just a static file.

- Photos zoom via wheel, double-click and two-finger pinch (1–5x) with
drag-to-pan; a touch swipe navigates prev/next when not zoomed.
- A new info button toggles a panel showing date, size, dimensions, camera
and GPS coordinates (resolving the old geoloc TODO), pulled from
/api/files/{id}/metadata.
- Zoom/pan state resets on every item change and on close.

Adds a Grid/Justified toggle to the photos toolbar. Justified mode packs
tiles into Flickr-style rows scaled to the container width using each
photo's real aspect ratio (from the new /api/photos width/height, falling
back to 1:1 when missing). It composes with the virtualized renderer:
per-group materialization and the off-screen spacer height estimates are
both layout-aware. The choice persists in localStorage.

- Tiles are focusable (tabindex / role=button / aria-label) with a
:focus-visible ring; Enter opens the lightbox (or toggles in selection
mode), Space toggles selection.
- Shift-click extends the selection from the last anchor across the
timeline; the range is tracked in the selection Set so it spans
dematerialized (off-screen) groups, with visible tiles updated at once.

- Add Modal.confirmDialog() (Promise<boolean>, built on openPanel so it
inherits the overlay, animation, focus-trap and Escape handling) and use
it to replace native confirm() in the photos batch-delete and lightbox
single-delete flows.
- The lightbox now reflects the real favorite state when an item opens
(previously the star always started empty) and toggles favorites through
the favorites module so its cache stays in sync.
- Add photos.delete_* i18n keys (English; other locales fall back to en).

The photos timeline rendered every tile into the DOM and grew it
unbounded on infinite scroll, degrading on large libraries. Each
date-group is now a <section> whose grid is materialized (tiles
inserted) only while near the viewport and dematerialized (emptied,
height frozen as a spacer) once it scrolls away, driven by an
IntersectionObserver rooted on the scroll container. DOM nodes stay
bounded by a few screens regardless of library size.
- Grouping (day/month/year), infinite scroll, multi-select, video
thumbnails and fade-in are all preserved.
- Selection state and the video-thumbnail cache survive the
materialize/dematerialize cycle.
- Falls back to full rendering when IntersectionObserver is unavailable.
- Spacer heights are estimated from grid geometry and re-estimated on
resize.

Backend — Photos timeline now groups by real capture date instead of upload time. New MediaMetadataService (FileLifecycleHook) extracts EXIF DateTimeOriginal from images and container creation_time from videos (mov/mp4/mkv) via nom-exif, timezone-correct (OffsetTimeOriginal), persisting captured_at so the existing media_sort_date trigger takes over. Adds POST /admin/photos/metadata/reextract to backfill existing media. Falls back to upload date when no embedded date exists.
Frontend — premium grid cards: combined metadata line (relative date · size, owner avatar when shared), custom selection checkbox with a clear checked state, uniform full-width 4:3 thumbnail tiles independent of filename length, centered file-type icons, and a hit-test fix so checkbox/star/kebab clicks reach the controls (the decorative thumbnail no longer captures pointer events). Notification messages internationalised across all 16 locales. Broader polish: design tokens, a11y/focus-visible states, brand + PWA assets.
Chore — bump semver-compatible dependencies (cargo upgrade); add nom-exif 3.6.1.

Deleting a multi-photo selection fired one `DELETE /api/files/{id}` per
photo in series — 300 selected photos meant 300 sequential round-trips
with the UI blocked on `confirm()`. Switch to `POST /api/batch/trash`
(already used by the file view), chunked to the backend's MAX_BATCH_SIZE
of 1000, so a selection of any size collapses to ceil(N/1000) requests.
Only items the server reports as successfully trashed are removed from
the grid; the selection bar refreshes to reflect any failures.

Replace the innerHTML full-rebuild in _render() with two paths:
- _renderFull(): used for first load, group-mode change, and deletions
- _appendBatch(n): append-only for infinite-scroll pages — O(batch)
instead of O(total). Existing <img> nodes are never destroyed,
eliminating the visual flash and unnecessary DOM churn.
Also:
- Extract _renderTile() helper (DRY tile HTML generation)
- Extract _observeSentinel() helper
- Scope _setupVideoThumbnails(startIndex) to only process new tiles
- Add data-group attribute on headers for efficient CSS.escape lookup
- Fix stale WebP references in comments (now JPEG)

Replace all 3 ImageFormat::WebP encode sites with JpegEncoder q=80.
Update fast-path to detect JPEG SOI instead of RIFF/WEBP magic.
Change file extension .webp -> .jpg, Content-Type headers, and
browser toBlob. Remove unused ImageFormat import and stale comments.
The webp feature stays for DECODING uploaded WebP images.
Schema (media_sort_date denormalization):
- Add media_sort_date column to storage.files with DEFAULT created_at
- Add trigger sync_media_sort_date: when file_metadata is upserted,
copies COALESCE(captured_at, created_at) into files.media_sort_date
- Add partial index idx_files_media_timeline on (user_id, media_sort_date DESC)

Video thumbnail pre-scaling (client + server):
- JS: pre-scale canvas to max 400px before toBlob -- 22x less RAM, 15x less BW
- Rust: fast-path in store_external_thumbnail -- if payload is already
WebP with dims within max_dim, store as-is (zero decode, zero encode)
The double-submit CSRF middleware blocks all mutating requests
without the X-CSRF-Token header. photos.js was uploading video
thumbnails via PUT without it, causing a flood of 403 errors.
- Add getCsrfHeaders() spread to the fetch headers
- Add credentials: 'same-origin' to ensure cookie is sent
Backend:
- 204 response: add Cache-Control: no-store so browser never caches
'no thumbnail yet' — next GET after PUT upload gets the WebP
Frontend:
- _videoThumbCache (Map): persists fileId → URL across re-renders,
so switching tabs reuses cached URLs instantly (no re-decode)
- Render: videos with cached URL skip the 204/error/decode cycle
- After PUT succeeds: swap blob URL → server ?v=1 URL so blob is GC'd
- Concurrency throttle: max 3 simultaneous video decodes to avoid
overwhelming network + CPU when gallery has many videos
- Decode queue: pending videos processed as slots free up
Backend:
- get_thumbnail: for non-images, serve cached thumb or 204 (not 400)
- store_external_thumbnail: validate + re-encode to WebP + persist
- get_cached_thumbnail: memory → disk lookup without generation
- PUT /api/files/{id}/thumbnail/{size} endpoint for client uploads
- ThumbnailPort trait: add get_cached_thumbnail + store_external_thumbnail
Frontend (photos.js):
- On <img> error for video tiles, use <video> + <canvas> to extract
a frame at 25% duration using browser's native codec
- Show frame immediately via blob URL
- Fire-and-forget PUT to server for permanent caching
- Subsequent visits serve cached WebP instantly (no re-extraction)
Zero server-side dependencies — CPU distributed across clients.
